Saturday, September 14, 2013, 2-4 pmWomen and the Civil War
To continue the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, The House will present several programs in 2013-14 devoted to the era. First up, Susan Christides will present a program on the US Sanitary Commission and the Great Central Fair in Philadelphia, organized by women to support soldiers during the Great Conflict. Period clothing, fascinating facts and refreshments will highlight the program. Appropriate for all ages of history lovers.
October: Shades of Poe
The theatrical presentation of Poe's works throughout the house returns for its 5th year! Experience six of Poe's masterpieces performed in six different parts of the house (attendance requires walking and climbing stairs.) Audience size is limited, and performances sell out quickly, so don't delay! Performance dates will be October 17-20, 24-27, and 30-31. More details and ticket info at
Saturday, November 9, 2013, 2-4 pm: Victorian Funerals and Mourning Customs
A Victorian funeral was not a simple affair; costs could rival those of a wedding! The House will be set for a Victorian "funeral " when living-historian Sherri Groff, in full mid-Victorian mourning attire, presents a fascinating program enhanced with period reproductions. Appropriate for all who will attend with dignity and respect for the subject matter. Refreshments will follow.
Saturday, February 8, 2014, 2-4 pm: Medicine and Nursing in the Civil War
Sherri Groff returns with an interesting and informative program about medicine and nursing during the Civil War, and the roles & responsibilities adopted by women in the field of medicine. Period clothing and artifacts will set the stage; refreshments will follow. History lovers of all ages welcome. .
Saturday, March 8, 2014, 2-4 pm: Historic Swimsuits and Seaside Memorabilia
Kate Butler of Decotique returns, this time with her collection of historic swimsuits and seashore memorabilia. If you remember Kate's collection of hats, bags and purses, you know this program will be equally entertaining. Besides, it's never too early to start thinking about summer! Refreshments will follow - because there's plenty of time to get ready for summer!
Saturday, April 12, 2014, 2-4 pm: Weddings and Courting Customs
The House will display its collection of wedding dresses and gowns as a complement to Sherri Groff's presentation on courting customs and marriage. Refreshments to follow.
Sunday, May 18, 2014, 1-5 pm: Open House
